SALKANTAY TO MACHUPICCHU : Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days
Salkantay trek is an excellent alternative trek to Machu Picchu, one that makes its way around Mount Salkantay. For those persons who like adventure, this particular trek may be better than any other traditional routes to the famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. This remote path leads one through an amazing variety of landscapes and habitats varying from green, reach valleys full of blossoming forests and trees of different species to highland fields and glacial moraines flanked by steep rocky and icy peaks of impressive beauty. It can be done during the whole year, but the best time for this trekking is from April to December.
A stately 6.271 meter mountain, Mount Salkantay rises over Machu Picchu, in the breathtaking Vilcanota Range. There, at the end of a trekking route that combines the rarely surpassed magnificence of its natural backdrop and the attraction of the world’s best known pre-Hispanic legacy, stand the Machu Picchu citadel and the Inca Trail.
The expedition starts by taking the old Inca stone-road that leads to the lost city of Machu Picchu and crosses a mountain pass between Mount Salkantay and Mount Humantay (5.917 meters). The excursion then proceeds down the Aobamba river gorge up to the archaeological site.
From the path it is possible to get a unique view of the most beautiful mountains in Cusco: Wayanay (5.464 meters), Palcay (5.229 meters), and Wakay Willka or Veronica (5.750 meters), located on the opposite bank of the Urubamba river valley. Several Cusco trekking and adventure travel operators offer this circuit. It is also highly recommended to hire an experienced local guide.
The Salkantay to Machu Picchu trail is a challenging and demanding Peru trekking route which requires a good level of fitness and prior acclimatization to the altitude, preferably in Cusco. If you have any doubts of your ability to complete this trek, please consult your Travel Advisor and doctor.

INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU
The most popular trek in Peru is the famed Inca Trail, which is likely a road that the ancient Inca used for sacred pilgrimages. Along the route you can view ruins from the once great Incas, who cherished the Sacred Valley for its beauty and resources. Typically, Inca Trail Peru treks last 2 days, 4 days or 7 days. Cusco, the ancient Inca Empire capital, is where people usually head before taking on the Inca Trail, and if you don’t have your plans figured out, there are numerous travel agencies and adventure guides who can help you pick out the right package. Keep in mind that camping along the way on overnight trips is your only option for accommodations, so if you prefer to sleep in a bed, you might try just hiking the last part of the Inca Trail, which can be done in one day. Regardless of where you start, Machu Picchu is the ending point for the trail, so you will always have a most just reward for your efforts.
Each day up to 2,000 tourists flood the ancient Inca mountaintop city of Machu Picchu in southern Peru. They come to marvel at temples built from perfectly chiseled blocks of granite and pay homage to the sun.
Most of the tourists travel by train from nearby Cusco. Others ride the bus. A few hundred heartier souls arrive on foot after a four-day slog along the famed Inca Trail.
Machu Picchu Under Threat from Pressures of Tourism Can Tourists Save a Peruvian Rain Forest? Inca Traditions Pay Off for Peruvian Weavers "For the average tourist, [the Inca Trail] could be the adventure of a lifetime and a real stretch both physically and psychologically," said Karin Muller, a writer, photographer, and adventurer based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
